LNA Program for New Americans

Overview of Program

In the fall of 2024 we will offer a new program for those looking to become Licensed Nursing Assistants! Second Start is partnering with New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) and Southern New Hampshire Services to offer a FREE program for New Americans looking to become LNAs. This program will start with an English language intensive course with an ESOL teacher emphasizing medical terminology necessary for the program. After successful completion the class moves on to the LNA Training Program where students will further their knowledge in a 60 hours of on-line theory, hands on experience in a laboratory setting at NHTI. In addition students will complete 60 hours of a clinical where they will apply this knowledge in a real world setting at a local hospital, nursing home or patient facility. The third portion of the program the students will once again work with their ESOL teacher to review all that they have learned and are required to know for the state LNA exam. This three-week portion will help to make students best prepared for the exam.

At any point that a student may be struggling with the material they can be matched with a volunteer tutor. Many of our tutors are active or retired medical professionals who are very familiar with the work students intend to do. Working with a tutor, in addition to class, is a great way to stay on top of all the new material being added along the way.

We plan to offer this FREE course twice a year. Each cohort can run with a minimum of 6 students and a maximum of 8 students. We hope to make a positive impact on the Capital region as there is a great shortage of LNAs. In addition, we want to create opportunities for our New American neighbors to work in a profession that they are passionate about.

  • There is an English language requirement for admittance into the program. Students must test at a level 4 or higher on the The Adult Basic Education (TABE) assessment (6th grade level English). Second Start will assess all interested individuals.
